Chapter 9

Teila ended up leaving for LA on Friday, before Tucker’s start the next day. She had done her job. All the sports sites and gossip sites too were blowing up with pictures of Tucker and his baby. His social media was getting millions of likes. The bar brawl was forgotten.

I checked my phone obsessively. I thought if anything would get Jenna to contact me, it was all this attention on Tucker and Janie. But no, nothing.

I felt like absolute S on Friday. The last time I’d drunk that much was probably when I hit the legal age and my friends from college took me out. I’d woken up late on Friday morning with Tucker changing Janie’s diaper.

“Wow, those diapers really expand,” he was murmuring. “Thank you, by the way, for not taking a crap. Poop. Sorry, I have to say baby-appropriate words for that now. Am I supposed to put some cream on you? Where does Caro leave that?” I heard him searching around. “Ok, we’ll skip that for now. Man, you’re squirmy. You’d go right off the table if I didn’t hold you, wouldn’t you? You’re like a wiggling noodle.” There was a lot more bumping around. “You’re good to go, noodle.”

Even though my head hurt and I wanted to puke a little, it was still the cutest thing I’d ever heard.

I had a very low-key morning, what with drinking gallons of water and trying not to vomit. I’d never realized how noisy Janie was. When Tucker came in after his workout he laughed at me. Loudly.

“Let’s go for a walk,” he said, reaching down and pulling me to my feet. “You need some fresh air.” We put Janie in the stroller, and I did feel better outside.

The rental house was in such a pretty neighborhood, big houses, lots of space. “Is this what it’s like, where you live in California?” I asked.

“I live up on a hill. It has a great view of the Bay and Mount Tamalpais.”

“Mount what?” He said it a few times until I got it, then he told me more about life in Marin County. It matched with what I had read about it, and sounded very nice. But I also knew that it was very expensive, even besides the housing. Childcare, food, gas, almost everything cost more. I needed to find a good job, something that used my degree. Something I could tell my mom about and not have her make a face like she’d sucked on a lemon.

“Talking about where you live makes this move much more real to me. I guess I better go home and start packing.” And tell my parents. Oh, S. That was going to suck. “Do you want to come with me?”

He looked surprised. “To help you pack?”

“To act as a buffer when my mom freaks out when I tell her about moving.”

Tucker laughed. “It would be my pleasure. She has a little bit of a mouth on her.”

“Just a little.” We decided to go on Sunday afternoon, which he had off.
